This month we are featuring an item from the Ethel Waters exhibit. This LP, His Eye is on the Sparrow, features her trademark song (the title track) along with a number of other great gospel songs arranged by Paul Mickelson.

Ethel Waters was a legendary African-American actress, singer and entertainer. She began her career as a jazz singer, and went on to star in Broadway stages. Some of her popular musicals such as “The Member of the Wedding” and “Mamba’s Daughters” became successful in their time.

In 1957 she sang at her first Billy Graham Crusade at New York’s Madison Square Garden. She appeared at many other Crusades in the following years, singing His Eye is on the Sparrow, a song that has touched the heart of millions.
