June is military appreciation month at the Billy Graham Library.

As part of the celebration, a new exhibit highlighting the ministry of Billy Graham to U.S. troops through the decades was unveiled last week as part of the Journey of Faith tour.

The military exhibit, displayed in “The Ministry” gallery of the tour, features some favorite memorabilia and never before seen items collected during Mr. Graham’s various trips abroad ministering to troops including:

  • I Saw Your Sons At War – a book written by Mr. Graham based on his time in Korea
  • Boots from Korea – heavy boots issued to Mr. Graham for Korea’s 30-below weather
  • Marine Corps medallion – presented to Mr. Graham in May 2003
  • Desert Storm Bible – given to Mr. Graham in 1991 when he preached at the Pentagon
  • Silver cross pin – worn on Mr. Graham’s cap while visiting troops in Korea during Christmas 1952

In 1944, Billy Graham was headed toward a military career as a chaplain in the U.S. Army when a case of the mumps disqualified him from service. However, his dedication to the armed forces never wavered, and he spent substantial time abroad ministering to troops.

“God used Mr. Graham to encourage and bring hope to soldiers serving in the trenches during some of the most horrific military operations of our time,” said Tom Phillips, vice president of the Billy Graham Library. “We are humbled to be able to honor those who have sacrificed for the freedoms of our country by showing them gratitude through this month-long tribute, but continue to recognize their service each and every day.”

In addition to the military exhibit, the Library will host a special military appreciation luncheon on Friday, July 11, for U.S. armed services veterans, retired and active-duty service members. The event is free, however advance reservations are required and can be made by calling (704) 401-3263.

Then on Saturday, July 12, as part of the children’s Share God’s Love event, kids will participate in a service project writing letters to military. In addition to the service project, there will be a Bible lesson for children, inspirational music and a special flag ceremony presentation by a local JROTC unit.

Throughout the month of July, military veterans, retired and active personnel who visit the Library will receive a free copy of Touch Points For Those Who Serve as a small token of appreciation for their service and sacrifice. Additionally, Ruth’s Attic Bookstore inside the Library offers a 10 percent discount to military every day of the year.

The special military exhibit runs through the end of July. Admission to the exhibit and Library is free. For more information about upcoming events visit www.billygrahamlibrary.org.
