Franklin and Bessie’s Picks—April 2021

April 19, 2021

This April at Ruth’s Attic Bookstore, we’re featuring books picked by Franklin Graham and Bessie the Cow.

Each month, Franklin picks a book based on its inspirational message, while Bessie picks a book for children to enjoy.

Franklin’s Pick: Billy Graham: The Man I Knew by Greg Laurie

Billy Graham Was the World’s Best-Known Evangelist—Loved and Admired by Millions. But Very Few Knew Him Personally.

Pastor and bestselling author Greg Laurie was one of those fortunate few, blessed with an insider’s view of Billy Graham’s world for more than two decades.

With the same painstaking research and eye for detail that distinguishes his previous biographies, Steve McQueen: Salvation of an American Icon and Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon, Laurie now turns to the life of his beloved mentor, offering the intimate perspective of a disciple and friend.

As a strapping North Carolina farm boy, Graham surrendered his life to Jesus at a camp meeting led by a blustery itinerant preacher, but he never lost the mischievous twinkle in his eye or his fun-loving air.

Laurie sheds light on Graham’s lesser-known struggles—such as a broken heart before he met the love of his life and a crisis of faith from which he emerged stronger than ever. From the evangelist’s private challenges and public successes to his disappointments and joys, Billy Graham: The Man I Knew provides a vivid portrait of one of history’s most remarkable Christian lives.

Bessie’s Pick: The Tale of Two Kings: God’s Story of Redemption by Gloria Furman, illustration by Natalia Moore

From the very beginning, the Bible tells a story of redemption. God made the first man to rule as king over all He created, only to see Adam’s reign end before it had barely begun. God knew all this and that’s why He sent the One True King, Jesus, to dwell with us and reclaim what Adam had lost, saving mankind from the penalty of sin.

Bestselling author Gloria Furman makes this concept come alive for kids in this colorful and creative book comparing Adam, the archetype, with Christ, “the last Adam.” Children will learn that while Adam’s sin sentenced all of us to death, Jesus’s crucifixion and glorious resurrection restored the promise of eternal life for all those who believe in Him.

Kids will be reassured that because Jesus is still on the throne, they can trust him whenever they feel sad or scared. There’s nothing that Christ their King can’t do for them!
