Billy Graham Book Feature: “The Journey”

May 2, 2026

Billy Graham consistently wrote and spoke on topics shaped by the questions he heard repeatedly throughout his ministry. He was intentional about addressing the spiritual questions he encountered, as he hoped to encourage people in their daily walk with Christ.

In 2006, he wrote The Journey, a book about how to deal with life’s common temptations and disappointments while making sound decisions and discerning God’s will. Through seeking God daily in prayer and having an intentional relationship with Him, God makes clear the path to take in your individual spiritual development.

In the book’s forward, Billy Graham writes, “An architect draws the plans for a new building—but it still has to be built. A composer writes a new piece of music—but it still has to be played. A chef devises a new recipe—but the ingredients still have to be cooked. In the same way, God has given us a blueprint for living—but we must know what it is and then put it into action.”

The book is divided into four sections:

  • The Journey Begins
  • Strength for the Journey
  • Challenges Along the Way
  • Staying the Course
Billy and Ruth Graham share a walk through a forest together in 1977

No matter where a reader is in their personal journey of life, the book is intended to speak to a reader’s past, present and future, with an ultimate view towards an eternity in Heaven with Christ. With chapters on true love, parenting and passing the baton, The Journey speaks to every season of life.

Billy Graham writes in the book’s first chapter:

Life is a journey—although sometimes we forget it … Perhaps you see your own life’s journey as a series of unrelated events—some good, some bad—strung together like beads on a string. Or perhaps you feel trapped like a leaf in a rushing stream, tossed about by circumstances beyond your control. Or like many people you may never have stopped to think about the road you are traveling—never asking where you came from or why you are here or where you are going. But God didn’t intend for our journey through life to be this way.”

Through The Journey, you can discover Billy Graham’s insights on facing temptation and responding to life’s disappointments, along with practical advice on knowing God’s will, strengthening your marriage, and coping with the bad things that crop up throughout your personal journey of faith.

The Journey is available for purchase in the Ruth’s Attic bookstore at the Billy Graham Library. The bookstore is open Monday-Saturday 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Sign up for special text-only offers and discounts by texting BOOKS to 484-946-7735.
