On this date in 1997, Rev. Billy Graham gave the invocation at the second inauguration of President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore.

These two license plates “Billy” and “Ruth” were given to Billy Graham and Ruth Graham for their car in Washington, D.C.

Below is a portion of the prayer that was shared on this day, 20 years ago:

“Our Father and our God we thank you today for the privilege of coming into Your presence on this historic and solemn occasion.

We thank You for Your gracious hand which has preserved us as a nation.

We praise You for the peaceful continuity of government that this inauguration represents.

We ask that as a people we may humble ourselves before You and seek Your will for our lives and for this great nation.  Help us in our nation to work as never before to strength our families and to give our children hope and a moral foundation for the future.” —Billy Graham, January 20, 1997
