Did you know that August is National Golf Month? This past weekend many golfers tuned-in to watch the PGA Championship from Rochester, N.Y.
An avid golfer for some time, it was on a golf course at the Florida Bible College that Billy felt the Holy Spirit tugging at him to commit his life to preaching the Gospel. Billy recalled this event in an interview, “Then one night I remember going out… The school was surrounding by a beautiful golf course right on the Hillsborough River and I remember going out in the moonlight night and lying on the edge of the eighteenth green and just thinking a lot. It just seemed to me that there was something pulling me, I couldn’t say what it was, I didn’t hear a voice, but I knew that God was calling me to some form of religious service. I didn’t know what form. So I got on my knees on that eighteenth green and I said, “Lord, I’ll go where you want me to go and I’ll be what you want me to be.” There came a great peace in my heart and there was emotion there. I had tears.”
In 1968 Billy Graham shared this anecdote while speaking to the Pro-Am golfers and their wives in Atlanta, Ga.:
“Some people think that golf is mentioned in the Bible, because probably the best golf course in Israel is in Caesarea where the Apostle Paul spent at least two years, and because it may have been in Caesarea that he wrote, ‘I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course!’” (2 Timothy 4:7)
No matter your course in life, we hope today you’ll find peace in your journey.
