Faith Karhan has volunteered at Christmas at the Library for years. She loves reading to the children for Story Time. “I think it’s the English teacher/Sunday school teacher in me,” Karhan shared. “I’m always excited by the smiles and attention of the children and parents; everyone loves to be read a good story! It’s fun to quiz the children, especially elementary age, about details of Christ’s birth. Many are in awe learning the Wise men were not at the stable and took two years to travel to Bethlehem.”
Faith and her husband Mick moved to Mount Holly, North Carolina, from Ohio in 2009. They’ve always supported Billy Graham and his ministry, watching his Crusades even as children. “Our daughter graduated from Wheaton and we loved the Billy Graham Center there. We were excited to live near the Library and start serving the first we heard of Christmas at the Library,” Faith shared.
Each December, thousands of people attend Christmas at the Library to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ through festivities including story time for the children, a live nativity, horse-drawn carriage rides, and carolers. More than 200 volunteers are needed each season to help make Christmas at the Library a memorable experience.
Why volunteer?
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” (1 Peter 4:10)
God has given each of us gifts and talents. When we use those gifts to serve Him, we feel a sense of purpose and accomplishment. We experience a sense of joy. Volunteering unlocks the potential God gives us to use and grow in the gifts He has given us. You never know who you might encounter through volunteering that needs a touch of God’s love. God can use you.
God has certainly used the Karhan family and they would encourage you to volunteer as well. “The phrase ‘It’s more blessed to give than to receive,’ is too narrow in regard to Christmas at the Library; we always receive many blessings in return for giving our time!” Faith Karhan said.
