For Students: Past Meets Present at the Billy Graham Library

Each fall brings a return to the school-year routine for students across the United States—with supply list shopping, wake-up schedules, and homework routines. From inside their classrooms, students learn more about the world around them and the history of people, places and things. But learning doesn’t need to be limited to classrooms!

Students enjoy completing the “Bessie’s Brainteasers” scavenger hunt during The Journey of Faith tour.

The Billy Graham Library invites students of all ages to learn about the life of Billy Graham and his impact on the history of the 20th century. When visiting the Library, students can explore Billy Graham’s humble dairy farm roots at the Graham family homeplace. They can also take the free Journey of Faith tour, where film presentations, compelling memorabilia, and historical recreations tell Billy Graham’s incredible story. A visit to the Billy Graham Library will inspire students to recognize the impact of a single life and help them imagine how they, too, can create a legacy for future generations.

As students take The Journey of Faith tour, they’re challenged to complete a scavenger hunt known as “Bessie’s Brainteasers.” The scavenger hunt is offered in both a pictorial version for our younger guests as well as a written version for students in higher grade levels. Additionally, students can take a step back in time through the lens of one of Billy Graham’s ministry team members with our free vintage press pass lanyards. These cards share the biography and photo of their assigned BGEA ministry team member, with questions on the back of the card to answer as they go through the tour. Students are able to keep their press passes as a souvenir of their visit. The press passes can also provide a wonderful follow-up activity once the students return to the classroom as they share what they learned about the individual on their card.

Teachers are encouraged to utilize the free downloadable lesson plans available on the Library’s website to give an added lens to a field trip at the Library. Lesson plan topics include “Billy Graham and Racial Equality,” “Pastor to Presidents,” “The Music of the Ministry,” “The Cold War,” and many more. Each lesson plan provides activities to do before, during, and after a visit to the Library, and each plan is aligned with state and federal standards.

Today, student groups can also explore the life of Billy Graham through the full-day STEAM field trip program with engaging activities in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. The program is suitable for all grade levels and all materials are provided. The only cost for the day is lunch from the on-site Graham Brothers Dairy Bar. Groups from across the region have hailed the STEAM program as “the best field trip [they’ve] ever done!”
