Billy Graham was often asked why there is so much evil in the world, and he admitted that he, too, struggled with this question. Ultimately, the answer is that we live in a sinful world where humanity often chooses to follow its own way and desires instead of those of God. When evil seems to take over, it can be hard to see the glimmer of hope through the darkness.
In his book, World Aflame, Billy Graham explores how humanity’s rebellion against God leads to much of the pain and despair that people all over the world experience daily. In the introduction to the book, Graham writes: “Christians must never fall into the trap of thinking that a Bible-based philosophy of world events and world destiny will parallel the world’s philosophies.” It is easy to fall into the snare of questions like, “If God is good, why does evil happen?”—but we live in a fallen world, a world full of sin where we, as fallible humans, generate the bad things that happen.
In World Aflame, Billy Graham addresses three great questions:
Can we know God?
Has God revealed Himself?
Can fellowship with God be restored?
In response, he writes:
“Astounding as it may seem, in spite of man’s transgressions and rebellions, God loves man with an everlasting love. God has never forsaken man. The most dramatic quest of the centuries is God’s loving and patient pursuit of man. God longs for man’s return and recovery.”
